First off, you must have a large memory card and a lot of patience. Those photos of the fireworks and the lightning were just those few out of hundreds. I'm no pro.
I used a 2-3 second shutter speed on the lightning with the ISO at 100 since it was a little light out and I wanted the photos with a dreary look. It was hard catching the lightning because I didn't know where it would strike. It was surrounding me, so I just chose a spot and kept clicking the shutter (on a tripod of course) for 50 frames or so.
